The Phone That Made Me Angry

Weight, Materials, and the Illusion of 'Green'

A Personal Call for Smarter Policy
So what do we do? First, mandate user-replaceable batteries. It's not radical—it's how phones were in 2010. Second, require spare parts to be available for at least five years at reasonable prices. Third, standardize chargers and cables—we've got USB-C, but there are still proprietary standards like MagSafe and Pixel Snap. Fourth, and most important, shift the focus from recycling to reuse. Repairing a phone and using it for five years has a fraction of the carbon footprint of buying a new one. That's a win-win for consumers and the planet.
I'm not optimistic about the Pixel 11 or 12. But I am hopeful that the EU's upcoming rules will force change. And I'll be watching to see if the US follows. In the meantime, I'll keep my dead Pixel 10 Pro as a reminder: our phones are more than just gadgets. They're testaments to our values. And right now, those values are broken.
