The 1.5°C Goal Isn't Dead—But It's On Life Support

Yet current NDCs commit to only a 14% collective reduction by 2030 versus 2022 levels—far short of the 43% needed (OECD/UNEP). That's a massive gap, but it's not insurmountable. We have the tools; we just need the political will. Let's break down what actually needs to happen.
The Numbers Are Grim, but Not Hopeless

It's not just about wind and solar; it's about electrifying everything and cleaning up the grid. But we also need to double the rate of energy efficiency improvements—the IEA calls for increasing the annual rate of global energy intensity improvement to just over 4% per year to 2030 (IEA). And we can't ignore methane: the Global Methane Pledge, launched at COP26, commits over 100 countries to cut methane emissions by 30% below 2020 levels by 2030 (State Department). Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, and reducing it is the fastest strategy available to slow warming.
But Pledges Are Cheap—We Need Law and Money
Here's the uncomfortable truth: pledges are cheap, but implementation costs money. Currently, 110 to 114 countries plus the EU have adopted net-zero targets covering about 88% of global emissions, but only 30 countries and the EU—representing just 17.7% of emissions—have enshrined them in law (OECD/UNEP). We need legally binding commitments, not just press releases. And we need to fund them. The IEA estimates that global clean energy spending must rise from about $1.8 trillion in 2023 to $4.5 trillion annually by the early 2030s (IEA). That's a huge investment, but it's a fraction of what climate damages will cost if we fail. Carbon pricing can help: revenues hit a record $104 billion in 2023, covering 24% of global emissions (World Bank), but that's still not enough. We need to expand carbon pricing and use the revenues to finance the transition.
What This Means for You: Stop Waiting for Others
As practitioners, we can't wait for governments to act. We have to push for policies that make a difference at every level. Whether you're a business owner, a city planner, or a voter, you can advocate for stronger NDCs, support renewable energy projects, and demand that your government enacts the Paris Agreement's five-year cycle of updated plans. The first global stocktake at COP28 called for a transition away from fossil fuels (UN DESA), but that's just words unless we back it up with law and money. We need to hold our leaders accountable to their promises.
Quick tip: Don't get paralyzed by the enormity of the problem. Focus on one concrete policy change you can influence—like a local renewable mandate or a methane regulation—and push for it relentlessly.

What we lack is the political will to implement them at the speed and scale required. The gap between current pledges and the 43% cut needed by 2030 is huge, but it's not insurmountable. If we triple renewables, double efficiency, and cut methane now, we can still keep that goal alive. But if we keep kicking the can down the road, we'll bequeath a 2.8°C world to our children.
