In 2010, Mercedes had Michael Schumacher drive an SLS AMG around the inside of a tunnel—a full 360-degree loop. Sixteen years later, Voyah, a Chinese automaker, recreated that stunt with an electric SUV. The Zhuiguang S, a 5,050mm-long, 3,000mm-wheelbase mid-to-large pure electric SUV, recently drove up a circular tunnel wall, over the top, and back down, completing the same loop. It's a flashy way to say: this family hauler has a serious chassis.

But beneath the spectacle lies a more relevant conversation for anyone tracking environmental policy. The Zhuiguang S isn't just about g-forces and suspension tuning. It's a case study in how automakers are balancing performance, efficiency, and the regulatory push for cleaner transportation.

The Price of Performance: What 22.39万元 Means

The Zhuiguang S launched in Chengdu on August 15, with three trims: the rear-drive Max at 22.39万元 (about $31,000), the rear-drive Ultra at 24.99万元, and the dual-motor Ultra+ at 27.39万元. Early buyers get up to 55,000 yuan in perks, including a deposit discount, configuration upgrades, and financing offers, valid through September 30, 2026.

For a vehicle with this much tech—four lidars, a 98kWh battery, and a 475kW dual-motor setup—the pricing undercuts many competitors. But the real headline is what Voyah is trying to prove: that a big, comfortable SUV can also be agile, efficient, and environmentally responsible.

Aerodynamics Aren't Just About Speed

The Zhuiguang S uses 10 through-type air ducts and 19 functional vents to manage airflow. Front bumper and fender ducts smooth turbulence around the front wheels; channels between the hood and rear sort high-pressure air and clean up the wake. Dual active grille shutters open and close based on cooling needs. These details matter because drag directly affects range—and range is a policy metric.

Governments worldwide set fuel economy and emissions standards based on vehicle efficiency. For EVs, that translates to kilowatt-hours per mile. A slippery body isn't just about lap times; it's about squeezing more miles from the same battery, reducing the need for charging infrastructure, and cutting the carbon footprint of manufacturing and electricity generation.

The Chassis That Does the Talking

Voyah fitted the Zhuiguang S with an all-aluminum front double-wishbone and rear multi-link suspension, plus a standard "EDC variable magic carpet" system. This adaptive damping tightens the suspension during hard cornering and softens it over bumps. A high-end air suspension offers 80mm of height adjustment.

For the loop stunt, the car needed enough power to climb the wall and enough grip to stay planted. The 475kW all-wheel-drive system and the aluminum chassis delivered. But on the road, that same hardware means stable high-speed cruising and confident lane changes—attributes that encourage safer, more efficient driving habits.

Battery Tech and Charging: The Policy Backbone

The Zhuiguang S sits on an 800V silicon carbide platform, supports 5C fast charging, and packs a 98kWh battery. The rear-drive version claims a CLTC range of 740km (about 460 miles). Charging from 20% to 80% takes 10 minutes; 15 minutes adds up to 577km. For policymakers, such fast charging reduces range anxiety, a key barrier to EV adoption. Faster charging also means less time plugged in, which can ease grid strain if managed smartly.

But there's a trade-off. The all-wheel-drive version uses more energy for extra power. Voyah offers both—so buyers can choose efficiency or performance. That's the kind of flexibility that helps EV penetration across different consumer needs.

Inside the Cabin: Comfort Meets Efficiency

Inside, the Zhuiguang S is a rolling living room: dual 15.6-inch screens, a 29-inch AR-HUD, a 6.6L cooler, and 27 speakers. The front seats are zero-gravity with ventilation, heating, and massage. The rear seat folds forward for more space. There's also an 80L front trunk with drainage, perfect for wet gear or smelly items.

But comfort isn't just about luxury; it's about practicality. A car that's pleasant to drive and ride in encourages people to keep it longer, reducing manufacturing waste. And the cabin's efficiency—good insulation, smart climate control—means less energy wasted on heating or cooling.

The Environmental Policy Angle: EVs as a Tool, Not a Toy

Environmental policy isn't just about tailpipe emissions. It's about the entire lifecycle—from battery production to electricity generation to end-of-life recycling. The Zhuiguang S, with its long range and fast charging, supports a broader shift away from fossil fuels. But it also highlights challenges: battery materials, grid capacity, and the carbon cost of manufacturing.

Voyah's stunt may be a gimmick, but it underscores a serious point: EVs can be fun, practical, and efficient all at once. That's the message that can move consumers—and policy—forward.
